Toothaches are quite common and happen due to factors like tooth decay in which there are holes formations in your teeth. Such formations are mainly bacterial which destroy the hard tissues present in the teeth. Otherwise, toothaches also happen due to the formation of cavities. Cavities are formed when small particles of food get stuck in your mouth over a long period of time, having a dry mouth, bad or poor oral hygiene, frequent snacking and so on. Salt

Easily available ingredient in every household, salt is known for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Salt helps in reducing inflammation, reduces pain, controls the infection from spreading and also prevents the growth of bacteria. So just take ½ teaspoon of salt and mix it with warm water. Swish it and throw it out. Try this at least three times for better results. You may also make a paste of salt either with lemon juice or mustard juice and apply it on the painful gums and gently massage for a few minutes and then wash it with warm water.

Cloves

An important ingredient, when it comes to dealing with acute toothaches owing to cavities, cloves have antibacterial, analgesic as well as anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing the pain, providing relief as well as in arresting the infection from spreading. Just chew one clove till the time the oil from it starts giving out its oil and then holding it under your tongue for some time, or, if easily available, then just mix ½ teaspoon of clove oil with sesame seed oil. Take drops of this mixture on a cotton ball and apply it to the painful part every night.

Garlic

An underrated vegetable which has strong antibiotic as well as antibacterial properties and is hence, even recommended in the event of tooth decay or cavity. Not only does it provide relief from pain, but it also helps in making our teeth and gums stronger.

Turmeric

Turmeric has found references in Ayurveda as an herb with anti-inflammatory as well as antibacterial properties. Turmeric is effective in giving respite to cavity pain. Further, it also helps in keeping the gums healthy and prevents decay of tooth due to bacterial infection. Just apply some turmeric in its powdered form and apply it on the affected tooth. Keep it for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse off. Alternatively, make a paste of turmeric and mustard oil. Apply this paste by gently massaging on the painful tooth or gums and leave it on for at least 15 minutes and then spit it out of.

Licorice

As per some of the research studies so conducted, licorice helps in maintaining strong teeth owing to the presence of two components Licoricidin and Licorisoflavan A, both of which help in preventing the decay causing germs from growing and reducing plaque. So you may either use dried licorice powder or the soft licorice stick while brushing your teeth daily.

Oil Pulling

An old but effective practice which has been followed for years and which helps in tackling bleeding gums and bad breath. This method helps in cleansing the mouth by killing the harmful bacteria which may cause tooth decay and toothache. Just follow this process, preferably in the morning on an empty stomach and see what results you get. Take 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in your mouth. Swish it gently for approximately 20 minutes. Do not gargle or swallow and then spit it out. Now rinse your mouth, preferably with salt water due to its antimicrobial properties and now brush normally.

Wheatgrass

Being antibacterial in nature, wheatgrass is also effective in fighting against tooth decay and cavity. Moreover, the presence of Vitamin A, E along with minerals likes calcium, magnesium and iron, which help in making your teeth and gums stronger. Have wheatgrass juice on a regular basis or chew some wheatgrass if you can find it easily on a daily basis or mix one part of wheatgrass juice with six parts of water. Swish the mixture for about one minute and then spit it out. Repeat this at least three times a day.

Nutmeg

It has been scientifically proven that nutmeg extract consists of anticariogenic properties which help in preventing cavity and tooth decay which are caused by harmful bacteria. So you can either apply some nutmeg oil with the help of a cotton swab and leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water or make a paste freshly grated nutmeg and mix it with either clove oil or oregano oil. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water. For better results, try this remedy at least three times in a day.

Indian Gooseberry

High in Vitamin C and antioxidants, Indian Gooseberry is known to combat decay and dental infections. Either you can have one every day or you may consume it in the form of a capsule (after consulting your doctor about the same though) or you can take ½ teaspoon or this fruit in its powdered form along with ½ glass of water on a daily basis.

Indian Lilac

Popularly also known as Neem, Indian lilac is blessed by nature with innumerable medicinal benefits. Its antibacterial nature helps in destroying the harmful infection spreading bacteria. Additionally, it also helps in maintaining strong dental condition. So you can opt for toothpaste containing this herb on a regular basis or you may also brush your teeth with its soft stick if you can easily find it or rub some freshly squeezed juice of Indian lilac onto your teeth and gums. Leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse off with warm water for better results on daily basis.
