Supplements are beneficial for the health of the heart. The primary role of these supplements is to lower the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, boost the level of high-density lipoprotein or good cholesterol in the blood and improve blood circulation.
4 Supplements For Healthy Heart
Vitamin B Complex
The B vitamins including folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 can reduce the risk of heart diseases by lowering the level of the amino acid homocysteine in the blood. Several studies have linked elevated homocysteine level to higher risks of cardiovascular diseases. Meat is the primary dietary source of homocysteine.
This harmful amino acid is broken down into beneficial compounds glutathione and SAM by the B vitamins. Researchers have observed that too much homocysteine circulating in the blood damages the arteries, increasing the risk of developing atherosclerosis and blood clots. Moreover, elevated homocysteine level also induces production of pro-inflammatory compounds, which increases the risk of developing inflammatory conditions.
Niacin
Another B vitamin that is beneficial for the health of the heart is niacin. Several studies have documented the cholesterol-lowering role of niacin. This B vitamin can dramatically boost the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol level in the blood. It can cause modest reduction in LDL level.
By improving the lipid profile, niacin supplements can reduce the risk of heart damage from accumulation of cholesterol in the coronary arteries. However, few studies have revealed that niacin may also increase the homocysteine level in the blood. To prevent this side effect of niacin, health experts recommend combining niacin supplements with other cholesterol medications.
Psyllium
Psyllium supplements commonly used for treating constipation is also beneficial for the heart. The fiber present in the husk of the Plantago ovata plant seed inhibits absorption of LDL cholesterol in the gut. However, the effect of psyllium supplements on HDL is unclear. According to Dr. Mimi Guarneri of the Scripps Center of Integrative Medicine in California, regular intake of 15 grams of psyllium can cause about 9% reduction in the LDL level.
When taken with cholesterol medications such as statin, psyllium supplements can enhance the effectiveness of the drugs. Therefore, for reducing the risk of cholesterol related damage to the heart, health experts recommend frequent intake of psyllium supplements.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acid supplements are considered beneficial for the heart. The polyunsaturated fats that comprise the omega-3 fats help to boost the HDL level in the bloodstream. They are also blessed with anti-inflammatory property that reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases by suppressing production of inflammatory proteins and chemicals.
Researchers have observed that omega-3 fats can also bring down the level of triglycerides in the blood. Effective omega-3 fatty acid supplements are available in the form of fish oil supplements. DHA and EPA present in fish oil are easily absorbable. Vegetarians may try flaxseed oil supplements.
Studies suggest that fish oil supplements can reduce angina pain and decrease the risk of heart attacks. Normally one to four grams of fish oil supplements are considered sufficient for preserving the health of the heart.
