Mucus which is thick, sticky and gooey is unbelievably important for our bodies. It contains antibodies and enzymes that help to trap bacteria, viruses, dust and other unwanted substances from the air that we breathe in and prevent them from invading the body and attacking it.
Under normal circumstances the body produces about one liter of mucus everyday. This mucus just trickles down the throat and is not even noticeable. But when excess mucus is produced by the mucous membranes that line the mouth, nose, throat, sinuses and lungs it blocks and congests the airways and makes breathing extremely difficult.
A bad cold, flu, allergies, hay fever, viral infections and sinusitis trigger the excessive production and the mucus changes in consistency. It becomes thicker and stickier and takes on a yellowish green color. Excessive mucus also causes a runny and stuffy nose and produces an irritation and itching in the throat. The mucus membranes become inflamed and lead to pain in the chest.
