Treating Skin With Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion Procedure

Microdermabrasion, though similar to demabrasion procedure, involves a less aggressive approach and the level of abrasion used is gentler. A thinner outer layer of the skin is removed in this process. Therefore, the result you get for removing blemishes, scars and reducing wrinkles is not as great as you can expect from a standard dermabrasion treatment. But it can surely improve your skin tone and allow you to resume your normal activities very soon.

After the procedure, your skin may become slightly sensitive and appear little red or pink for a day or two. There is no need to take a break from your work for this treatment as the procedure requires minimal downtime and is complete non-surgical and non-chemical and also causes no bleeding. Just take care to protect your face from sun rays and harsh environment after the procedure.

How Microdermabrasion Works?

A diamond-tipped wand or micro-particles are used for sloughing off the top layer, which is known as epidermis, for stimulating new skin growth. No topical or local anesthetic is used during the procedure as the process causes almost no discomfort.

Dermabrasion Procedure

Dermabrasion is a procedure which involves “sanding” off of top layer of your facial skin using high speed hand-held electrical machine containing specialized laser device. After the procedure, your treated skin will be replaced with a new, refreshed and smoother layer of skin. This procedure is useful for treating wrinkles, acne scars, age spots and scarring resulting from accidents and other skin lesions.

Local anesthetic is used for performing the procedure usually, but in especial cases, general anesthetic may also be used. The procedure causes crusting of the skin and requires time to recover. The skin may remain swollen, sensitive and appear pink for several weeks after the procedure. For going through this treatment, you need to plan and take off time from your work for at least 10-15 days. After this period, you can resume your normal routine. But be sure to protect your skin from ultra violet rays of the sun using a good quality sun block. Dermabrasion treatment is particularly suggested for people with active acne or for a person who has gone through a bad skin burn, radiation treatment or chemical peel to avoid risk of infection and skin damage.
