Tendonitis is a painful condition in which the tissues that surround the muscles and the bones become inflamed either due to injury or overstretching of the tendons and by aggressive exercise which irritate the tendons and cause inflammation. Diseases such as arthritis and rheumatism also cause the tendons to become inflamed. Our physical movement such as walking, lifting or jumping is facilitated by the tendons which help relay the contracting force of the muscles which in turn move the bones and cause movement.
When the muscles contract the tendons glide in one smooth motion and pull the muscles without causing any friction. But if the tendon becomes inflamed its smooth and easy movement is lost and it jars at every move. There is swelling and redness and the joint too becomes tender and painful. The tendons in the ankles, hips, knees, wrists and shoulders are the most easily compromised tendons and they make movement very difficult and painful.
