For this reason it is recommended that one should avoid touching one’s eyes and if accidentally you do touch your eyes then immediately wash your hands with a strong soap and water. People suffering from conjunctivitis should regularly wash their eyes with plain cold water without applying any form of soap. This will not only keep your eyes clean of mucus formation but also help reduce the redness and inflammation caused by the bacteria.

Wash your eyes with water as much as possible especially before going to bed at night and as soon as you wake up in the morning.

Boric Powder

Boric powder contains chemicals that are effective in treating the bacterial infection. To treat conjunctivitis with boric powder mix two teaspoons of the powder with a teaspoon of spring water to form a paste of easily spreadable consistency. Apply the paste evenly over the eyes and leave for 15 minutes.

Remove the paste using plain cold water. Repeat the treatment four times a day for three days. At the end of three days your infection will be completely gone.

Rose water has soothing effect on infected eyes and is therefore considered an effective remedy for conjunctivitis. However, it is best to use organic rose water or rose water prepared at home for treating conjunctivitis. To prepare rose water at home boil petals of five roses in 1 liter of spring water. Allow the infusion to cool before straining it.

Pour the resulting rose water in a clean bottle and store it in the fridge. Dip two cotton balls in the cool rose water and gently squeeze them. Apply the cotton balls over each eye and leave for 10 minutes. Repeat the application of rose water any number of times to soothe the eyes and reduce the swelling.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an excellent home remedy for treating conjunctivitis. Mix half two teaspoons of baking soda with 500 ml of spring water. Pour the mixture in a spray bottle and spray the soda liquid over your eyes throughout the day. This will help arrest the spread of infection and also reduce inflammation of the eyes.

Honey

Honey eyewash is an excellent remedy for treating conjunctivitis in children but is works just as well for treating the infection in adults. Prepare the honey eyewash by diluting organic honey in boiled (but warm) water.

Splash your eyes with the honey water at least five times during the day. Honey has anti-bacterial properties that are helpful in eliminating the infection causing bacteria.

It is important to keep your towels, handkerchiefs and other clothing clean at all times especially if you are suffering from conjunctivitis. The bacteria causing the infection can live on our clothes as well resulting in recurrence of the infection. Wash all your clothes in hot water using a strong detergent. Do not share your clothes with anyone.

Tea Bags

Tea bags are a good way of treating the inflammation and redness caused by conjunctivitis. The tannins present in the tea are beneficial in treating the infection. Wash used tea bags under running water and keep them refrigerated at all times.

Take out two tea bags and apply them on your eyes and leave on for 15 minutes. Remove the bags and wash eyes with cold water. Wash the tea bags and place them in the fridge again. The treatment should be done at least six times during the day for as long as the infection lasts.

Treat conjunctivitis with cucumber slices. Peel and thinly slice one small cucumber and place a slice of cucumber over the infected eyes. Leave on for 10 minutes and then throw away the cucumber slices. Wash the eyes using cold water. This treatment should be done at least four times a day since cucumber will help bring down the inflammation of the eyes and also reduce the redness in the infected area.

Potato juice is a commonly known remedy for treating infections of the eye. The enzymes present in the juice of potato help ward of bacteria causing the infection. To treat conjunctivitis with potato juice, peel and thinly slice one medium potato. Take two thin slices and place one over each eye.

Put the rest of the slices in a container filled with cold water. Leave the slices over the eyes for 10 minutes. Repeat the treatment five times a day to fasten the process of healing.

Avoid Eye Makeup

Do not wear any kind of eye makeup while suffering from conjunctivitis because it can result in severe infection. Makeup products contain very strong chemicals that can cause further damage to the eyes along with the infection. In fact, avoid using eye makeup (including eye liners or kajals) for at least 10 days after the infection has completely gone. This will ensure that the infection doesn’t recur.
