Dust
Protect yourself from dust. Dust contains many microbes which infects our lungs and irritates our throats. There are also minute particles in dust that may activate allergic reactions. With so much pollution around, it is always advisable to protect ourselves from dust.
Always wear a mask when cleaning your house, riding a motor bike, visiting construction site or going to the areas where there is dust particles in the air.
Protect From Cold Air
Protect yourself from straight contact of cold air. Cold air exaggerates the condition of cough. Avoidance of direct contact of cold air reduces the sufferings of dry cough and cures cough faster.
Don’t Smoke

Black Pepper
Suck on to four to five balls of black pepper and your urge to cough will be reduced significantly. The peppery taste of pepper inhibits cough.
Tulsi (Holy Basil) Tea
When preparing tea, add few leaves of Tulsi to it and let it soak with the tea leaves. Tulsi is a great expectorant and is used in many ayurvedic cough syrups.
Onion
Raw onion juice is great for dry cough. Mix one teaspoon of fresh onion juice and one teaspoon of honey and take twice daily. For extracting onion juice, finely chop a medium sized onion and strain its juice through a muslin cloth.

This homemade cough recipe is great for suppressing cough and very beneficial for children. Take one cup honey, two teaspoon fresh ginger juice, two teaspoon lemon juice, Mix together. Simmer it for ten minutes. Do not boil. Take one teaspoon as and when required. It can be stored in fridge for two days.
Whiskey
Whiskey when mixed herbs also acts as a great cough suppressant. Mix together, 1 cup of honey, one teaspoon crushed black pepper, 1 tsp ginger juice, 5 tsp lemon juice and a cup of whiskey. Simmer till it just begins to boil. Strain and your potent cough syrup is ready.
Drink half a cup before going to bed, the herbs will cure your cough and whiskey will provide you with a good night’s sleep. This syrup is not suitable for children below twelve years of age. You can store this in your fridge for two days but is more potent when taken after freshly made.

Making this concoction is very simple: Have ¼ tsp clove powder, 1tsp crushed black pepper, 1 tsp minced ginger, few black tea leaves, 5 Tulsi (Holy Basil) leaves and two cups of water. Simmer it together in low flame till water reduces to one cup. Add half teaspoon cow’s ghee (clarified butter) to it. Strain and sip it hot. Two cups in a day for three days and it assures to cure every type of cough.
Ginger and Garlic
When you have difficulty in sleeping due incessant coughs, take this homemade medication for instant and whole night relief. In two teaspoon of clarified butter (ghee) cook two pods of crushed garlic, half teaspoon of minced ginger, four balls of crushed black pepper.
Cook till garlic is deep brown. Eat the mixture when it is still warm. Do not drink any water for half an hour after having this mixture. The anti-viral, antiseptic, anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties of ginger and garlic is well known, clarified butter acts as a soothing agent and as binder for mucus.
Milk and Turmeric
