Night cramps can be defined as muscular pain during the night. Night cramp is caused when muscular nerves of our body gets contracts and stretched repeatedly at night that leads to a painful sensation. Night cramps most commonly occurs in legs and calf but it can also affect other parts of the body. Any specific cause for night cramps is still not very clear but there are various other reasons that can cause night cramps such as, over tiredness and excursion, medicinal side effects, depression, some chronic disease, alcohol consumption, various disorders, over exercising, injury, deficiency of calcium and other useful contents, standing for long time, dehydration, excessive cold or hot weather, pregnancy and various others.
The symptoms of night cramps are burning like sensation on muscles, sudden pain in muscles and uneasiness. Generally night cramps are not very serious in nature but without proper precautions & treatments it can get worse. Local markets and drug stores have plenty of ointments and creams for treating night cramps. Additionally many herbal remedies are also useful in night cramps.
Herbal Remedies For Night Cramps
Essential Oil
Essential oil is very useful in any kind of muscular pain as well as night cramps. Essential oil is very rich in many medicinal properties, you can use eucalyptus oil, mint oil, basil oil, cinnamon or any other essential oil for night cramps.
For using first dilute it and then massage gently on muscular parts of the body. Remember not to apply more pressure while massaging, just a simple massage can do. Another method of using essential oil is by adding few drops in bathing water and having bath with it.
Willow Bark
Willow bark is very useful herbal remedy and can be used in various health problems mainly on joint or muscular pain. Willow bark has anti inflammatory properties which are useful in muscular pain along with antibacterial, anti fungal, antiseptic, anti pyretic and analgesic properties that can help in various health problems. You can get willow bark capsules from any drug store and use them as described or 2 times per day. You will feel relaxed after taking it for a week or two.
Chamomile Tea
Chamomile is another wonderful herbal remedy which is very effective in many health problems including muscular pain and night cramps. Chamomile has a content named glycine which is an amino acid and very useful in relaxing the muscles. You can simply use chamomile tea during morning and evening. Use it for at least 7-8 days for better result.
Turmeric
Turmeric is considered as the best muscular pain reliever along with its other capabilities. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that are effective in relaxing the muscles. For using turmeric in night cramps you can either consume it in little quantity with warm milk at night or you can use it with honey.
Turmeric with honey is useful for daily use also. Adding a little amount of turmeric in your food preparations can also be helpful.
Nettle
Herbs are natures gifts to the mankind, there are wide range of herbs available for various health related problems. People in older time always preferred them for using in almost all health related problems. Nettle is another useful herb used for muscular pain and also for night cramps.
Nettle is very rich in magnesium that is good for body muscles, and also useful in immune system enhancing. For night cramps just drink nettle tea twice a day and you can feel its effectiveness after few days.
